Virtue of khumbi (mushroom) in
the light of Hadith:
Translation:
It is narrated by Hazrat Sa‘eed ibn Zayd (ra) that the Holy Prophet ﷺ said: “Khumbi is part of
the Manna (heavenly food), and its water is a cure for the eye.”
(Musnad Imam A‘zam)
1.
Introduction to Khumbi:
Khumbi is a whitish
self-growing plant without a stem or leaves, which naturally emerges from the
ground in rainy regions during the summer. This plant grows at least three
inches and at most seven or eight inches.
2. Types of Khumbi:
By color, khumbi has three
types, and by texture there are two types:
By color:
- Black
- Reddish-white
- Pure white
By texture:
- One is umbrella-shaped.
- The other resembles a radish.
Note:
Here, the second type is meant—the one resembling a radish or, more simply,
shaped like a chicken thigh. That is the one used, and which the hadith refers
to: the second type that is long like a radish or like a chicken thigh, and is
pure white. The remaining types—black, reddish-white, and umbrella-shaped
khumbi—are not suitable for use.
3. Method of
Use:
It is most commonly prepared as a curry, which is delicious, and is cooked like chicken curry. Alternatively, you can roast khumbi and use it in homemade fast food (sandwiches, burgers, slices, etc.), mixed with chicken.
4. Benefits of
Khumbi:
- Its water is curative for weak or painful
eyes.
- Khumbi produces blood.
- Enhances sexual potency.
- Beneficial for all brain-related ailments.
- Helps reduce obesity.
- Stimulates hair growth and strengthens hair. (Faidan Tib Nabawi ﷺ, by Hakim Muhammad Aslam Shaheen, p. 259)
5. The Reason
Khumbi Is Curative:
In the hadith under discussion,
khumbi is described as part of the Manna (heavenly food), and Manna was sent
down from the heavens. Indeed, the Divine revelation states:
وَأَنْزَلْنَا عَلَيْكُمُ
الْمَنَّ وَالسَّلْوٰى (البقرہ: ۵۷)
Translation:
“And We sent down to you the
Manna and the quails.”
Since khumbi has been deemed part of the heavenly food, it too becomes heavenly in nature. Therefore, because of its greatness, consuming it brings blessing, and its water is also healing—which turned out to be beneficial and healing for the eyes.

Imam A‘zam)
