Introduction of the night of power

The Virtues and Introduction of the Night of Power:

The Night of Power is one of the last ten nights of Ramadan, which is a night of great value, dignity, goodness and blessing, and on this night Allah Almighty revealed the Holy Quran. Allah Almighty has declared this night better than a thousand months.

Therefore, Allah says:

لَی٘لَةُ ال٘قَد٘رِ خَی٘رٌ مِّن٘ اَل٘فِ شَھ٘رٍ

Translation

"Laylatul Qadr is better than a thousand months".

Eighty-three years and four months make up a thousand months. This means that a person who spends this one night in worship is as if he spent eighty-three years and four months in worship. And the period of eighty-three years is the minimum because the saying “better than a thousand months” indicates that Allah Almighty will grant a reward greater than a thousand months of worship.

The reason for naming the Night of Power Laylatul Qadr:

There are various sayings regarding the reason for naming it:

1- Imam Zuhri says that the meaning of Qadr is status and position. Since this night is higher in terms of honor and status compared to other nights, it is called Laylat al-Qadr.

2- Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) has narrated that since on this night, the destiny and decisions of a year are entrusted to the angels by Allah Almighty, that is why this night is called Laylatul Qadr.

3- Qadr also means “narrowness.” In this sense, the reason why this night is called Qadr is because on this night, angels descend from heaven to earth in such abundance that the earth becomes narrow.

 Hadiths about laylatul qadr:

1- Imam Malik narrates that he heard from reliable scholars that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was shown the lifespans of the previous nations, so he underestimated the lifespans of his nation and that they would not be able to do as many deeds as those who lived longer. So Allah Almighty granted him Laylat al-Qadr, which is better than a thousand months.

2- Imam Ali ibn Urwah narrates that one day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mentioned that four people from the Bane Israel worshipped Allah Almighty for eighty (80) years without disobeying Him even for the blink of an eye. He named them: Hazrat Ayyub, Hazrat Zakariyya, Hazrat Ezqil ibn al-Ajjuz, and Hazrat Yusha ibn Nun (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Hearing this, the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) were surprised. Then Hazrat Jibreel (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to him and said: O Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Your Ummah is surprised that these people worshipped Allah for eighty years and did not disobey Him even an atom. Allah Almighty has revealed something better than this. Then he recited verses 1-3 of Surah Al-Qadr in front of him and said: This is better than what surprised you and your nation, then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his companions were happy.

3- Imam Daylami narrated from Hazrat Anas (RA) that the Prophet (PBUH) said: Allah Almighty has granted Laylatul Qadr to my nation and He did not grant it to any nation before it.

4- Hazrat Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “Whoever fasts out of faith and in the hope of reward, Allah will forgive his previous sins. And whoever prays on Laylat al-Qadr out of faith and in the hope of reward, Allah will forgive his previous sins.”
