Meaning of istikhara and its importance:

The word “Istikhara” means to wish for good, to ask for”good and to consult a trusted person. The greater the importance and usefulness of something, the more it is taught, taught and attracted towards. For example, the Holy Quran is the word of God, and”it has great virtues. By reciting one syllable of it, ten v”rtue’ are granted. The Qur’an has many rights on Muslims, som” of which are:

 To read it, to understand it, to practice it, to teach it to other people, is the famous saying of Holy Prophet Hazrat Mohammadﷺ  (PBUH):

 “The best of you is the one who learned the Qur’an and taught it to others.” 

Assuming the same thing, we can say that the Holy Prophet ﷺ has also taught his Ummah about Istikhara in this way, so that they do not get into trouble in any matter.

 Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) says:

 Holy Prophet Hazrat Mohammad ﷺ used to teach us Istikhara in the same way he used to teach us Quran.

 Method of Istikhara:

 A person can do istikhara by himself. If you can’t do it yourself, you can have someone else do it. The way to do this is to perform two rakat Nawafil at night before going to sleep with the intention of Istikhara. Read Surah Al-Kafrun in the first rak’ah and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the second rak’ah.

 After the prayer recite this dua:

اَلّٰلهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ وَاَسْتَقْدِرُكَ بقُدْرَتِكَ فَأَسْئَلُكَ بِفَضْلِكَ الْعَظِيمِ ؕ فَإِنَّكَ تَقْدِرُ وَلَا أَقْدِرُ وَتَعْلَمُ وَلَا أَعْلَمُ وَأَنْتَ عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوبِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ خَيْرٌ لِّي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي وَعَاجِلِ اَمْرِى وَاٰجِلِهٖ فَأَقْدِر٘هُ لِى وَيَسِّرُهُ ثُمَّ بَارِكْ لِي فِيهِ اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا ال٘أم٘رَ شَرٌّ لِّي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ اَمْرِى وَعَاجِلِ أَمْرِي وَاٰجِلِهِ فَاص٘رِف٘هُ عَنِّى وَاصْرِفْنِي عَنْهُ وَأَقْدِر٘ لِيَ الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُ كَانَ ثُمَّ ارْضِنِى بِهٖ.

 After this dua, sleep facing the Kaaba. 

 If you see white light or green or clear flowing water in your dream, it is an indication that the work you want to do is better for it. And if one sees dark or murky water or ink in a dream, it is a sign of failure. By doing this for seven days, the condition will come out clearly in the dream. There is a hadith that the person who performs Istikhara is not harmed and the person who performs Istikhara is not troubled.

 It is important to remember: That the person doing Istikhara is bound by fasting and salat, he is pious, righteous and trustworthy, and he is bound by Shariah principles.

 Some important issues regarding Istikhara:

 

Some important and fundamental issues regarding Istikhara are presented below:

•  The purpose of Istikhara is to create stability in the relationship between Allah and His servant.
•  Istikhara can be done in a case where a person is hesitant and does not seem to be successful in determining a definite direction. 
• Those matters that have the possibility of both good and evil and profit and loss. 
• Istikhara cannot be discussed about taboos and prohibitions, duties and obligations and daily affairs such as food and drink, sleeping, waking up and clothing etc.
•  Istikhara cannot be done for Jihad and Hajj etc. but it can be done with reference to determining their time.
•  It is mustahabb to recite Durood Sharif and Surah Fatiha before Istikhara.
